Frequently Asked Questions

What Buyers Ask Before a Quote

The questions purchasing and technical teams ask most often about the equipment on this page.

What data do you need to select an exchanger?

Media pairs, flow rates, inlet and outlet temperatures and the allowable pressure drop — those four are enough to start the thermal calculation. Adding fouling factor, design pressure and any material preference speeds the selection up.

What does calculating with HTRI mean?

HTRI is a calculation package widely used for the thermal and hydraulic design of heat exchangers. Heat transfer area, tube layout, core velocities and pressure drop are determined with it, so the exchanger delivers the expected performance on site.

How do you choose between fixed tubesheet, floating head and U-tube?

A fixed tubesheet is the most economical but the bundle cannot be cleaned mechanically. If the shell side fouls, a floating head is used; where differential thermal expansion is high, a U-tube or floating head is preferred. The decision follows the fouling tendency of the media and the temperature difference.

What is a TEMA class and which class do you build to?

TEMA is the standard that defines the types and fabrication classes of shell-and-tube exchangers. We design to TEMA and calculate pressure-retaining parts under ASME BPVC, EN 13445 and PED 2014/68/EU. The required class is settled in the specification according to the severity of the process.

What is the difference between a water bath and an atmospheric vaporiser?

The atmospheric type takes heat from ambient air and consumes no energy but depends on air temperature and run time. The water bath type works through a heated water bath and is used where vaporisation must be continuous, at high flow and independent of climate.

Are you selecting a heat exchanger?

Media pairs, flow rates, inlet and outlet temperatures and the allowable pressure drop — with those four we run the thermal calculation in HTRI and recommend the type.
